Konami Has Blown The Full-Time Whistle On Its Iconic Series Of Football Games Pro Evolution Soccer

The Japanese game developer, whose Pro Evo titles have been the FIFA series’ main rival on games consoles for two decades, is retiring the series and replacing it with a new free to play game, eFootball, and signed up Brazilian international Neymar and Argentina star Lionel Messi as its poster boys.

While Konami says football is a ‘fresh approach’ for its long-running football franchise, eFootball is a new game, with a new identity.

“Starting with the strong foundations of Unreal Engine, which has allowed us to massively overhaul player expression, we’ve made a number of modifications to virtually create a new football game engine that will power eFootball for years to come,” said Seitaro Kimura, eFootball series Producer at Konami Digital Entertainment.

eFootball will be free to play across console, PC and mobile, but downloadable content will be available to buy. Konami says the new game will “present a fair and balanced experience for all players”

“Local matches featuring FC Barcelona, Juventus, FC Bayern, Manchester United and others will be available, for free, at launch. In the future, certain game modes will be sold as optional DLC, giving players the freedom to build an experience that follows their interests,” the developer adds.

The game will support cross-platform play, too, so Xbox owners can take on their friends who own Playstations.

eFootball will be released on a staggered basis.
